The Electronic Cigarette- The Safe Alternative?

By: Nick Terbush

Since 2006, the electronic cigarette has gained the attention of millions of individuals all over the world. It has been deemed "a safe alternative" for smoking and in this article we are going to discuss whether or not that claim is valid.

An undeniable fact is that cigarettes are deadly, causing cancer, COPD, Emphysema and whole range of other diseases. Then, add an extremely addicting drug known as nicotine and you have a recipe for disaster! Nicotine may be addicting, but that isn't what has killed millions and millions of people around the globe. It is the by-products inside the cigarette that kill. Heat, tar, smoke and 4,000 chemicals are the well known by-products of a cigarette. Just a few of the deadly substances being inhaled when an individual takes drag off a cigarette are carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogen dioxide, arsenic, hydrocyanic acid, hydragyrum and acrolein. But does the electronic cigarette have any of these deadly attributes?

The electronic cigarette requires a battery which activates an atomizer, when inhaled, that turns the nicotine in the cartridge into tiny droplets which are inhaled into the body to curve the cravings of nicotine. The electronic cigarette does not require combustion and therefore doesn't generate any combustion related smoke which leads to zero tar build up in the lungs and nearly eliminates all chemicals commonly found in ordinary cigarettes. However, the  electronic cigarette does emit a small amount of smoke to give the smoker an illusion he/she is smoking a real cigarette.

Smokeless cigarettes have become accepted as a safe alternative by the public as well as the Medical Association. Although not confirmed, electronic cigarettes may soon become an accepted tool for helping smokers quit. Since the electronic cigarette has the ability to be adjusted for different dosages of nicotine, an individual trying to quit can gradually lower the nicotine levels until she/he can stop smoking altogether without the fear of having withdrawls. The electronic refill cartridges come at different fill levels such as full, half, and near empty. And this can be utilized to help an individual quit. Although electronic cigarettes have not been confirmed to be utilized in this regard the potential is very apparent.

More research may need to be conducted to understand the effects of this type of nicotine admistration. The electronic cigarette lacks many (if not all) of the deadly attributes that traditional cigarettes carry. It certainly has been the biggest breakthrough in reducing the hazardous effects of cigarettes. It is recommend you contact your doctor before using the electronic cigarette if you have any cardiac problems or cigarette related diseases.
